Our clients, who live in this beautiful semi-detached home on the Northern Beaches of Sydney, wanted to make the most of their main living spaces, all year round. The challenge was to transform the spaces into more usable, functional areas, while making sure the new spaces were in keeping with the rest of the house. A key requirement for the clients was flexibility, so the solutions needed to be able to adapt to their needs over time. The clients wanted a fireplace — which needed to be large enough to fit their new TV above — and also plenty of storage outside, to make up for the lack of a garage or shed. Inside, to minimise collecting any more “stuff”, only minimal storage was required (this was a first not being asked to create more cupboard space!).
Starting with sourcing furniture for the deck area (in time for a big family Christmas), we then went about designing custom joinery to create one long line going from the living area to the deck, to accentuate the indoor/outdoor flow. New seating and storage was created with a bench seat, and a long concrete bench top is the perfect spot to perch and chat to the chef. There is plenty of storage under the bench, which is also flexible, as the BBQ is stored underneath, rather than being built in.
Inside, we sourced all new furniture and accessories, along with a new fireplace and joinery (where there was just a flat wall previously). The Samsung Frame TV sits above the fireplace, with all the AV equipment stored neatly away, accessible with infra-red technology.
The result is beautiful, functional spaces which now work harder for this family in both summer and winter. The best part about the finished product is that everything looks like it was there already, so perfectly fits in with the rest of the home.
