5 Quick Updates for your Home
Whether you're planning a party, or have relatives coming to stay, there are times when you need to freshen up your place QUICKLY. Here are 5 decorating ideas to get you on your way.
1. If in doubt — paint!
Apart from flooring, wall colour has the biggest impact on the feel of a space. It can also be one of the simplest to execute — especially if you have someone around who can do it for you!. When you re-paint a room, it can make everything look different — from the furniture, to artwork and lighting. And one of the best things about it is if you hate it (or, if you love it but think you might get sick of it one day) it’s fairly easy to change.
For a quick fix, it’s hard to go wrong with a warm white (see Dulux’s most popular whites here), although make sure you consider the aspect, size and light of a room and remember that the same white painted in two different spaces can look very different!
(And if you need help selecting a colour, we can help with a colour consultation in your home).
2. ‘Shop’ your home
This is always fun, and even better if you have a friend (with a good eye and strong arms) to help. Like finding old dresses in your wardrobe, simply moving your existing pieces around can completely change the way you see them. I did this with a friend just this past weekend and the change was instant, and very gratifying!
Try re-positioning the sofas in the living room, swapping bedroom cushions to the living room, and swapping around artworks from one wall to another. I generally judge the success of this based on the feel, not just the look. So once you're done, step back and ask "does this feel better?". And if it does, you've done well.
3. Cleanse and purge!
It sounds weird, but de-cluttering is one of my favourite things to do. Maybe not during the actual decision-making process, but when I’m done, and I have more space in my kitchen/wardrobe/book shelf/head, I honestly feel like a weight has lifted.
De-cluttering can also give you new ideas and clear up space, physically and mentally. If you need some inspiration to get started, two quotes I find helpful are:
“Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.” - William Morris
“Edit your life frequently and ruthlessly. It’s your masterpiece after all.” ― Nathan W. Morris
(or if you’re on a mission, try Marie Kondo’s book “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up” -- I absolutely love her philosophy of only keeping items which 'spark joy').
4. Add a mirror
If you have nothing on your walls to move around, I’d suggest adding a mirror for instant change. Mirrors can transform a space — they can make a room look larger, amplify light and brightness, highlight a view, give the room a new perspective and lots more! Another great thing is that you don’t always need to hang them. Large mirrors can look great leant up against a wall, above a fireplace or console.
I’ve found many a mirror at antique or second-hand stores, they’re generally cheaper, there’s no wait time and you’ll have a unique piece that no-one else has!
5. Plants and flowers
Having fresh flowers in a room adds a finishing touch to a space and makes it feel more homely and inviting, and generally adds to the feeling of wanting to be in that space longer.
In my book, bigger is better, so look for tall or large flowers (like proteas or lilies) or have a really large bunch. There are also so many great pots and indoor plants on the market these days to get you inspired.
